 2021 GUAPS Annual Ball

The GUAPS Ball held at The Star, Casino was a great success! It was an amazing night to celebrate the hard work of all Pharmacy students over the tough year that 2021 was. It was amazing to see everyone wind down for the end of year and great to catch up with friends and the staffing team. The GUAPS committee worked incredibly hard over 2021 and it was amazing to see it all come together at the end! We would like to thank everyone for coming and for those that helped create an awesome night!

Trimester 2 Orientation Day

For the start of trimester 2 2020, Josh and I participated in helping to facilitate some ice breaking activities for the new students commencing within the School of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Orientation Day is normally done face to face but given the current state of the world the department had to run the day on Teams. Our usual speed dating (or friend making) activity was never going to work so we had to improvise.

Every uni student loves bragging rights for a Kahoot, so the obvious choice was to develop a get to know you Kahoot (big thanks to Josh Clements and Emma Hadwen for putting this one together!!) to learn about the types of incoming students. Results showed there are some comedians coming through with some very funny names, such as my personal favourite, 'When's the Exam?' but on a more serious note there are people coming from overseas, interstate as well as locally and a reasonably even split of this being their first degree or not.

Alongside getting to know one another, students had presentations from faculty staff, placement information, PASS leaders, peer mentoring sessions and obviously the best one was the GUAPS presentation done by Josh who hyped the club up more than adequately.

Overall the day was a resounding success with only a few minor hiccup and technical difficulties.

Trivia Night Wrap Up

Below is an article written by GUAPS president, Joshua Clements, which was originally submitted and published in ePlacebo, the NAPSA magazine.

Ultimate QLD Trivia

At the start of the year, before COVID hit, we were able to hold a joint networking night with all Southeast Queensland pharmacy schools (GUAPS, QUTPSA, QPSA). We did feel there was a missing aspect to the night and soon identified what it was! With the Ultimate Queensland Trivia, we were joined by JCUPA, thus it making it a true, intra-QLD event. It was offered to all four pharmacy schools in Queensland and to our surprise and delight, we were also joined by a few interstate players!

The night ran smoothly with a strong competitive nature helping drive the event and keeping it exciting the whole way through. The competitiveness of the teams, however, was sure not to dishearten anyone from getting involved. Over the four teams, we had great involvement and even better costumes, a true must see! For those who missed out, you will just have to wait until next time as I am sure everyone will be dressed to impress.
To meet the tribulations of COVID restrictions head on, we moved online. Thanks to the amazing efforts of all of the Trivia Masters (selfless volunteers from each university), the night ran smoothly with limited bias, or so I have been led to believe! Our MC was none other than QPSA President, Eilis’ Rigby, who managed to keep all of us giggling. The night was organised with a team effort and it really shows the lengths that we can achieve, even with such location adversities! To finish the night off, we even had a little Meet the Presidents round and let me tell you, we have some impressive representatives on the Advisory Council. Did you know that James Yang (QUTSPA Present) had a goat named Buttercup and that Breannan Busetti has had a hand in fostering two children!
Together we achieved a joyous night of networking and, I feel I must say it, learning. With random facts and students from all over, this night has helped bring us together once more. On behalf of all four QLD Presidents, we look forward to organising more joint events in the future and offering the opportunity to create networks that will last long into the future.
